When a Saiyan goes Super Saiyan this means he got real mad suddenly and had a big rush of Energy Saiyans go super saiyan in rsponse to a need like Goku against Freeza or Gohan against Cell. Later on you can control whether or not you want to go Super saiyan against a enemy.

Super Saiyan, SSJ
This saiyan had a sudden burst of energy and pushed him over the limit. His muscle mass increases ALOT and his hair turns Gold or a yellow. His eyes even turn Green too and his eyebrows turn Gold. His power Level Goes sky rocketing high 50 times there normal level. Goku was the first to go Super Saiyan.

Super Saiyan 2, SSJ2
Well this stage increases muscle mass as well as the first stage. But whats different in this stage the Saiyans Yellow hair gets a little longer and spiker. His eyes still remain Green and his eyebrows are still Gold power Level goes even higher then SSJ 1 it more than doulbles. Gohan was the First to Go SSJ2.

Super Saiyan 3, SSJ3
Now this is some serious Power. Your hair goes SUPER long. I mean it comes down past your ASS! You look more menacing and lean. Your muscle mass builds a lot more then usual. you lose your eye brows and your viose goes deeper. Your hair still stays Gold, and Goku is the first character to go Super Saiyan 3.

Super Saiyan 4, SSJ4
Big changes happen in this stage. Your muscle Grow ALOT more then even SSJ3. Your hair turns usually black but it varies,you grow red fur over your body like a monkey And you grow a tail. This tail helps you transform into a Gold Oozaru(big Golden monkey). Your power Level is godly and really no one can beat you. Goku first did this against the Shenlong.
